Agricultural growth is impossible without scattered seed; and thus it is true of the gospel. And nothing scatters like persecution!

It's not how you start, but how you finish that matters! Few people finished better than Stephen... 

Standing Ovation

Acts 7:54-56

People will do almost anything to gain the approval of others. Stephen was not such a person. He loved his life for the approval of Christ, and he received a standing approval from him in death!

 

Resisting Grace

Acts 7:51-53

In making the most pointed application of his message, Stephen accused his hearers of resisting the Holy Ghost Himself. Indeed, when one rejects the convicting message of Scripture, he is effectively resisting the primary applier of that Scripture--the Holy Spirit of God.

God doesn't build buildings

That doesn't mean that building a building is wrong; it just means that the things that tend to impress us are not the things that impress Him. He is much more concerned about what we use them for!

God's call upon a person's life is unique, and it always involves a fresh view of Himself and His purpose. Moses received that call in an unlikely place through an unlikely means. The timing seemed all wrong too! But God's preparations are not ours...

The 40 Year Lesson

Acts 7:24-32

Moses was fully convinced that he was ready to deliver God's people when he was 40 years old. After all, he was mighty in word and deed. But God's ways are not man's ways! Not only were the people not ready for his leadership, but Moses was not yet ready to lead either.

The Jews rejected Moses long before they rejected Jesus.

Acts 7:11-23

God doesn't always work in the ways you think he will, and he doesn't always qualify people in the ways you would think he would! Moses is a tremendous example of someone who seemed like the perfect candidate for God's use... But good motives and impressive credentials do not a spiritual leader make.

 

The Gospel History Lesson

Stephen defended the gospel by telling a short history of the people of Israel. And he did so to some of the smartest religious people in the country! Intelligence does not always equate to biblical understanding.
